Belief - Music

Here you’ll find some Quicktime audio clips from the soundtrack to the movie. All the music was made using Apple’s SoundTrack software, which was new at the time, and I used the scoring of the movie as a chance to learn to drive it.

Here’s the opening theme music, with vocalese by Marguerite Juanico-Neilson

And here’s some of the fight music

This is the spooky music for the scene where Mel walks up the stairs looking for Lizzie

Here are three versions of the montage scene that depicts dinner. This was the first draft, but it was just too damned happy for a horror movie, and it was also a bit on the long side. It also stood out because it was the only time this music was heard in the the film - and later in the movie when the action picks up and the music has a stronger presence it seemed to be a big change.

So I recut the scene to make it shorter and made the music more rock based.

But this version seemed a little hard, and it really felt like something that I should have got a rock band to play live rather than just using loops. The drums never really sounded convincing - a bit on the thin side. Also I wanted to link the music to the music from the end of the film. So this version has some of the loops that are used in the fight music later in the movie, giving a better sense of cohesion to the whole soundtrack, the drum loop has more toms, and sounds fatter. Most of all it sounds like a piece of electronic music, rather than something that should have been done by a rock band.
