Kung Fu Vampire Killers

Kung Fu Vampire Killers

is a joyous celebration of pop culture and B movie conventions. The film is a genre bending black comedy / thriller, inspired by the Hong Kong Vampire genre typified by the "Mr Vampire" series, transplanted to Dunedin. Elements of Slasher and Zombie sub-genres sit next to 40s Noir and a darkly ironic humour, with characters drawn largely from Stoker's vampire novel.

The movie looks both forwards and backwards back to Caligari, Lewton, and Romero and forwards to a digital bleeding edge present where a filmmaker's vision need no longer be restricted by finance.

A conventional narrative serves as a framework to hang more "avant-garde" elements: unorthodox camera angles, expressionist lighting, and unconventional music are easily absorbed due to the clear narrative.

The film originated on digital video and exploits the full range of digital processing and compositing effects, creating a hallucinatory expressionism. Although influenced by the past masters of the horror genre in fact the style of the film draws heavily on Television advertising, with its lightning fast cutting and rapid effect changes.
